President's Column
The Executive Director's Report Association for Texas University Professionals |
TACT has been very busy working on behalf of higher
education this year. In this issue of the e-bulletin, Chuck Hempstead, our
Executive Director, writes about our legislative efforts to increase faculty
salaries, reinstate health and retirement benefits that were taken away in the
last legislative session, prevent community colleges from offering baccalaureate
degrees, and make shared governance a reality. Frank Fair, our Vice President
of Financial Affairs, describes our efforts to establish state-wide criteria for
Optional Retirement Plans to prevent the gouging of faculty in some
universities. Ricardo Barrera, the Student Government Association President at
Texas A&M University-Kingsville, relays student efforts to save the Texas Grants
Program for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The latter story is available to us due to TACT efforts to
organize with student organizations to present a unified and strong voice to
legislators regarding the needs of higher education. In addition to working
with Student Government Associations, we have begun working more closely with
Texas Council of Faculty Senates and with the American Association of University
Professors to effect the legislative changes listed in our legislative agenda. Make sure you continue to support TACT and to encourage
others, also. Together we can and will make a difference.
