Watch List 2011

The TACT State Board remains vigilant on such issues as the Academic Bill of Rights, College Readiness, State and local contributions to ORP/TRS, and teacher salaries.

TACT is accepting input on issues that you think will be brought before the 82nd Legislature.

TACT Legislator of the Year

State Representative Donna Howard has been selected as the TACT Legislator of the Year!  Rep. Howard (D-Austin), who serves on the House Higher Education Committee, was selected for her focus on students during committee deliberations, her continuing support for the TEXAS Grant, and for favoring the use of higher education specialists in the design and testing of public education.  She also insists on maintaining the quality of education while others seem more interested in the quantity of students receiving degrees.

Inaugural Hearing of Joint Oversight Committee

Yesterday marked the inaugural meeting of the Joint Oversight Committee on Higher Education Governance, Excellence, and Transparency.  The bipartisan committee is co-chaired by Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) and Representative Dan Branch (R-Dallas).  Discussion focused on reducing the micro-management of state universities by Boards of Trustees.

Rick Perry Appoints Five New Members to THECB

Governor Rick Perry has appointed five new members to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), to officially take office September 1, 2011.  The Presidential hopeful is under scrutiny for appointing a prominent donor of his, James H. Lee, to the Board.

For a complete tally of the new members’ credentials, see the official press release here: http://governor.state.tx.us/news/appointment/16517/

For an article detailing all of the THECB appointees’ relationships with Governor Perry, and other recent Perry appointees, click here: http://www.texastribune.org/texas-people/rick-perry/gov-perry-appoints-familiar-faces/

Get Involved.  Put your hard-earned dollars to work and contribute to the James M. Puckett, Ph.D. Government Relations Fund (GRF).  Contributions to this fund do not fund campaigns, but rather help to increase awareness of TACT in the public policy arena.

The TACT History Site is Now Live!

TACT has seen many successes since the 82nd Legislative Session ended.  Guns on campus are out for good, and outcome-base university funding is getting the boot.  The SLATE program at A&M has been eliminated, and surely more good news will follow such triumphs.

Celebrate the success of your colleagues and of TACT by visiting our new webpage dedicated to showcasing the association’s past, and looking toward its future:  www.tact.org/history

We’ve taken your photos and have implemented them in our TACT History Gallery.  This page is a work in progress, and there is still time to submit your favorite TACT pictures and testimonial quotes about the importance of membership.  Submit these items by August 1, 2011, and we may use them on the website and in the August eBulletin.  Send directly to tact@bizaustin.rr.com.

Get "Fired Up" About TACT!

The Legislative Session is over, we’re in the middle of summer, and it’s time to prepare for the annual TACT Fall membership drive.  Get “Fired Up” this year by checking out the brand new TACT YouTube Channel:  TACTTube, and the Fired Up About TACT! video.

Help spread the word about TACT and the new officers by distributing the TACT Officer Press Release among your colleagues and in your universities.

Chalk up another victory for Texas faculty as the Interim A&M System Chancellor ends the SLATE program, which rewarded faculty for student evaluations.

We’re gearing up to launch our new History page in preparation for the membership drive.  Remember to submit your favorite TACT memories, reasons for being a member, and your hopes for your career and the association’s future by August 1, 2011, and we may use them on the website and in the August eBulletin!  Send directly to tact@bizaustin.rr.com.
